Some patients with NTM infections are also vulnerable to other bacterial infections. Some of these infections may also be quite difficult to treat, particularly aspergillus, pseudomonas, klebsiella, or other gram-negative infections.
Patients with bronchiectasis (non-CF or Cystic Fibrosis-related) appear to be particularly vulnerable to pseudomonas infections.
It is important to have your sputum checked on a regular basis and particularly at any time when your symptoms change. This culture must be requested separately from the test for mycobacteria.
