The two key diagnostic tools for pulmonary NTM are:
• High-resolution CT scan without contrast
• AFB (acid-fast bacilli) smear test of the patient's sputum – either from bronchoscopy, or from one or more sputum samples
Both these tests are important to the diagnosis of pulmonary NTM disease. Regular chest x-rays do not provide the definitive imaging needed to make an accurate diagnosis.
